Child Welfare Simulation - In-Person ILT

GOAL: Help State social workers make informed decisions and understand unintended consequences when removing a child from their home.

DESIRED IMPACT: Help State social workers make informed decisions and understand unintended consequences when removing a child from their home.

USE: Originally part of a one-day interactive workshop with additional experiential activities that set the stage for the 90-minute activity. Also used as a stand-along experience for conferences and other groups.

KEY ELEMENTS: Role-based experience, ambiguous written and verbal instructions, randomized outcome, loss of controls, and realistic scenarios.

DESIGN ELEMENTS

Arcade Game for Critical Form

GOAL: Create an engaging activity that highlights the importance of slowing down and paying attention when performing a simple and routine task.

CHALLENGE: Incorporate an experiential activity that learners want to engage with and connects them to the impact stress has on our ability to pay attention to details and apply critical thinking to the task.

SOLUTION: An arcade-style game that mimicked the actual task, using realistic elements and challenges that required attention to detail.

DESIGN ELEMENTS

DESIGN ELEMENTS: Gamification elements include retro arcade sounds, a count-down timer, progressive levels, live models for a realistic feel and final thought-provoking challenge. 

ELEARNING PROJECTS

CREMATORY OPERATOR PRACTICE

CHALLENGE: Develop an experiential computer-based activity, without using VR or 3D animation, in which participants demonstrate their ability to use critical thinking throughout the cremation process.

SOLUTION: Using realistic role-based scenarios, participants guide a new crematory operator through realistic challenges and experience the consequences.

DESIGN ELEMENTS

GOAL: Create a realistic, scenario-based course that helped participants understand the consequences of their positive and negative decisions.

DESIGN ELEMENTS:  Created a 2D crematory with replicated machine panels, complex variables within Lectora that allow learners to program their machines, and a comic book look and feel.

NEW ASSOCIATE ORIENTATION

GOAL: Create an interactive, self-paced onboarding course that connected our new associates to our culture, key team members, and our values.

CHALLENGE: Overcoming the perception that eLearning couldn't accomplish that level of connection without a live presenter. The current orientation was a 2-hour live webinar with no cameras.

DESIGN ELEMENTS:  Interactive learning experiences that include individual exploration, realistic time management activities, video introductions, and practical activities to learn more about the Company.

SOLUTION: Modular Identify specific objections to eLearning design and present a design that addresses each concern and includes enhanced experiences.

DESIGN ELEMENTS

BLENDED PROGRAMS

CORE (leadership) PROGRAM

CHALLENGE: Creating a program that builds practical skills and tools for leaders with diverse responsibilities and with minimal day-to-day interference versus previous concept-focused classroom-only programs.

SOLUTION: A 12-month blended certification program with self-paced, peer, virtual, and classroom learning, along with coaching and practical assignments.

DESIGN ELEMENTS

GOAL: Design and implement a practical, location-based, skill-building program that develops strong, independent, and reliable location leaders.

DESIGN ELEMENTS:  Intentional competency-focused program with experiential activities, easily adaptable assignments, one-on-one coaching, capstone project, and final certification.

PACE ON-BOARDING PROGRAM (admin)

CHALLENGE: Lack of existing training, unique responsibilities by location, professionals new to the industry, a critical role that isn't understood by funeral directors, high-expectations with minimal support.

SOLUTION: A 12-week guided onboarding program that assigns existing admins to new hires, uses virtual technology, and manager drives approach.

DESIGN ELEMENTS

GOAL: Implement a flexible, individualized onboarding program that develops the skills and processes needed for effective funeral home admins.

DESIGN ELEMENTS:  Created A four-phase program, train the trainer for PACE trainers, virtual training sessions with one-week on-site training, SharePoint site for communication, tracking, and resources.
